February
7, 2005
A sunny day, lots of really fast, well prepared cars, adrenaline pumped drivers wanting to not only impress the huge crowd but their sponsors in attendance, live radio broadcast on the popular Linkz FM, and race fans hungry for the thrill of on the limit driving all conspired to make the event a resounding success. The event titled “Unfinished Business” lived up to the expectation of a face off between JMMC 2004 Drivers Champion Gary Gregg and 2004 JMMC Petcom Stages Rally winner Richard Rerrie. Gregg was untouchable in this event though, as his KFC/TSW Alloy Wheels/KIG Ford Focus WRC was head and shoulders above everyone else, distancing himself from the field on his first run by a whopping six (6) seconds, posting a time of 2.27.33! Gregg had a few problems on his latter runs, as he was judged to have picked the start for his 2nd run and on the 3 lap championship run the car spun and stalled, losing valuable time and resulting in a 9th place finish in that section. The winning margin at the end of the day was to be just over three (3) seconds, as Gregg’s NG Racing stable mate Peter Moodie Jr. (NG Racing/DMS Distributors/Kia Motors Mitsubishi Lancer Evolution 6) was busy whittling down his time to eventually post a best time of 2.30.66 to finish second in the JA8 class. This pairing has dominated the Ironshore tarmac sprints over the past season, as Gregg won here last February while Moodie won last May. Third in class was Rerrie in the Puma/KIG/Leroy’s Auto Glass/Kinn's Auto Parts Subaru Impreza WRX Sti (2.31.56 achieved on his 2nd run). 4th in class was 2004 JMMC Sprint Champion David Summerbell, 5th was John Ralston who made a very interesting departure from the track and he was followed in class by Marc Evans, “Chippy” Addison and Guy Fraser. Team Mobay Racing’s Douglas “Hollywood” Gore again lived up to his showboating name, catching a competitor on the course, aggressively slamming the gears in his shifts and doing tire burning donuts in the hairpin corner at the end of his championship run. His on track performance was good enough to put him in second place overall and first place in class JC2 with a time of 2.29.58. He was also successful in his negotiations with lady luck, as he had a similar encounter with the curb wall on the inside of the hairpin turn that put him up on 2 wheels, but the carried his power slide through in a neat arc and rocketed away from the crowd to thunderous applause. A few minutes earlier the same could not be said for the hard charging Mark Evans, as his AMJ Racing Mitsubishi Lancer Evolution 5 clipped the same curb and rolled. He was unharmed however, and the car was not significantly damaged. Second in the JC2 class was Peter Forbes in a Mitsubishi Cyborg. Two other very menacing looking cars in this class failed to make it through the day, as Marck Carey’s Mitsubishi Lancer Evolution 1 blew a head gasket and Matthew Donaldson’s Evolution 7 had damage sustained from an impact with the unforgiving curb wall. Class JN8 was won by Junior “Flette” Barnes in the West Med Pharmaceuticals/ Mekyah Jamaican Spring Water Mitsubishi Lancer Evolution 5 putting down a brilliant series of drives to turn the tables on class nemesis Dave Lee in the Spot valley Raceway Evolution 3, Macklin Peterkin also helping to push Lee down the leaderboard in capturing 2nd place for himself. Barnes’ best time was a 2.44.193 set in his second run, while Peterkin laid down a 2.44.845 on his first and only run, while Lee posted a 2.49.538 on his 2nd run. Jason Lawson placed 4th in class. Class JA3 was won with a come from behind drive by meet planner Dean “Duct Tape” Corrodus in the Straight Edge Construction/Mr. A/C/ Performance Centre/Spot Valley Raceway Honda Civic Type R with a best time of 2.45.83, getting the better of an outstanding Jodi Summerbell who was giving the guys a swift lesson after her second run, where she set the fastest two wheel drive time of the day up to that point! Jodi ended up second in class with a best time of 2.47.09 but suffered mechanical trouble on her last run in the NG Racing/Sweet Products/Bell Communications/Maxxis Tires Mitsubishi Mirage RS. Third in class was Christopher “Teach” McFarlane (2.50.56) in the borrowed “Purple Turtle”, the Honda Civic Coupe of Mike Wallace, the car having nothing to do speed wise with it’s name, possessing amazing power and acceleration. The car owner tied for fourth with Andre Weatherly in the West Med Pharmaceuticals/Mekyah Jamaican Spring Water Mitsubishi Mirage RS. The popular Bobby Marshal was fifth in class in the Singer/Motor sales and Service Mitsubishi Mirage RS, while Keith “Slicks” Saunders was 6th. Overall front wheel drive as well as class JA2 was won by the hard charging Raj Jadusingh in the Team Express/Cowan Electrical/Hilton Kingston Mitsubishi Mirage RS, posting a time of 2.45.65. Second was Tariq Minott in an immaculately prepared Victor Brown tuned Toyota Starlet (2.54.12) and Maurice Whittingham recovering from a first run spin on a high speed section of the course to post a time of 2.59.59 in the Mad Dem racing/Racing Shill prepared rear wheel drive Toyota Starlet. Class JA1 saw Noel Golding Jr. get the better of his dad Noel Golding Snr. n the shared GRD Racing Suzuki Swift Gti, being the only competitors in this class. The JA4 class was another father and son affair, but here the father got the better of the son, with Ferdinand Anderson posting a best 2.48.395 to his son Martin’s time of 2.50.290, both sharing the Andersons Auto Mitsubisji Mirage RS Turbo. Class JC1 was won by Garth Moodie in the NG Racing/Worldtron Toyota Corolla FX (2.52.41). Second was the rear wheel drive turbocharged Toyota Starlet of Allan Chen from Mandeville in a time of 2.53.94, while Clasford Woolery Jnr. in the revamped Westcomm Communications/First Choice Video Mini Cooper was third in 3.06.11. The 3 lap championship run was won by Peter Moodie Jr.(3.45.760), followed by David Summerbell in 2nd (3.46.389) and Richard Rerrie in 3rd (3.46.961). The fastest 3 lap time of the day however was achieved when Douglas Gore running in the MBMC top ten championship, achieved a time of 3.43.96 to the delight of the crowd, topping it off with a crowd stirring series of donuts in the hairpin turn area! The event was made possible by the Montego Bay Motoring Club in partnership with Bearings and Seals Auto Superstores, EML Windshield Centre, Westcomm Communications Store, Pharmaton and Ginsana natural health products, Kinn’s Auto Parts, The Pelican Restaurant, Ward’s Auto Parts, Ward’s Power Tools, Better Homes Hardware, Straight Edge Construction, Performance Centre, Linkz FM and Morgan’s Enterprises.
